Tuvar ( Tur / Toor for some ;) Dal




Ingredients :-

Tuvar Dal - 1 cup washed and  soaked for an hour,
Onion- 1 medium sized cut fine,
Tomato Paste or ready made puree - 1 tbsp,
Turmeric Powder- 1/2 tsp
Asafoetida /Hing - a pinch
Garlic - 8 flakes chopped fine,
Mustard seeds- 1/2 tsp,
Cummin seeds -1 tsp,
Fennel seeds - 1/4 tsp,
Whole Dried Red Chillies- about 6 ( not kashmiri chillies but the small round variety ),
Curry Leaves - 12, washed and patted dry,
Tandoori Masala Powder - 1/2 tsp

Water - about 4 cups

Coriander leaves - enough to sprinkle on top

Salt as per taste
Ghee- 1 tbsp ( i use butter sometimes ;) )

Method :-

Take a pressure pan and add dal ,onion,tomato paste/puree,turmeric powder and Asafoetida powder in 4 cups of water. About 6 whistles should be fine...( please note that cooking time of dal depends on the quality of the same... in some cases lesser number of whistles may be required. ) Release pressure from the pan n then open n stir well,check to see if cooked .

Take a small non stick pan and heat the Ghee. Add the mustard seeds and once they stop spluttering add the Cummin seeds,and Fennel seeds and Curry leaves.Once they change colour add the whole red chillies n fry till chillies turn a light brown. Then throw in the Garlic n fry till it is brown in colour. Sprinkle the Tandoori Masala in the mixture . Take pan off flame and pour this into the Boiled Dal . Taste for salt , stir in the LOVE  n mix well. Serve hot with Steamed Rice..... Enjoy!!!
